What Size Dumpster Do I Need?

September 2, 2026 · DumpsterX Rentals

Here's the short answer: most home cleanouts and remodels fit our 17 yard dumpster. Small jobs and anything heavy (concrete, dirt, shingles) belong in the 10 yard. Big, bulky projects like whole-house cleanouts call for the 22 or 30. Everything below is how to tell which one is yours, without ordering twice or paying for air.

We're DumpsterX Rentals, owner-operated out of Zephyrhills. I'm Ali, and I drive the truck myself to Wesley Chapel, Land O' Lakes, Dade City, Lutz, Tampa, and the surrounding Tampa Bay area. The advice on this page is the same sizing advice I give on the phone every day.

The pickup-truck test

Cubic yards mean nothing when you're staring at a garage full of stuff. Pickup loads do. Picture hauling your debris pile to the dump one truckload at a time. Three trips or fewer? That's a 10 yard. Five or six trips? A 17. If you'd be driving back and forth all weekend, you're in 22 or 30 territory. It's a rough comparison, not a measurement, but it gets people to the right bin far more often than guessing off a photo of an empty container.

Match the project to the size

10 yard: small jobs and heavy material

The 10 yard fits a garage cleanout, a one-room declutter, a small bathroom demo, or a fence tear-out. At 2.5 feet tall, it's easy to load over the side. It's also the only bin we send for concrete, dirt, brick, and block, at a heavy-material rate of $390 plus tax — clean concrete, dirt, brick or block only, filled no more than 3/4 full, prior approval required. Details on the concrete dumpster page.

17 yard: the one most people need

A kitchen remodel, a full bathroom gut, flooring and carpet from an entire house, or the cleanout of a two- to three-bedroom home. If you're on the fence between two sizes and your debris isn't heavy, this is usually the answer. It's also one of only two sizes we allow for roofing tear-offs.

22 yard: big cleanouts with furniture

The 22 yard includes the same 2 tons as the 17. What you're buying is room, so it's the right call for light, bulky debris: whole-home cleanouts with couches and mattresses, big deck tear-outs, or clearing a garage, attic, and shed in one shot.

30 yard: whole-house scale

Estate cleanouts, major renovations, and construction debris from larger projects. At 19 feet long and 6 feet tall, it swallows nine or ten pickup loads. If you genuinely need a 30, you'll know it, because the pile in your head already looks like a small mountain.

Roofing is its own case

For shingle tear-offs we usually recommend the 10 or 17 yard, and a larger dumpster only depending on the specific job. A big bin packed with shingles is simply too heavy to haul legally, and any honest hauler will tell you the same. As a general industry rule of thumb, about 7 squares of architectural shingles weigh roughly 1 ton, and a two-layer tear-off doubles that. We won't promise what your roof weighs; the landfill's certified scale ticket decides, and you get a copy of it. More on the roofing dumpster page.

When in doubt, go one size up (except for heavy material)

Debris always takes up more room than people expect. Cabinets don't stack flat, drywall breaks awkwardly, and furniture traps air. Going from a 10 to a 17 costs $70 more; from a 17 to a 22, $60 more. A second dumpster costs a lot more than that. So when it's close, take the bigger bin.

The exception is heavy material. With concrete, dirt, or shingles, weight is the limit, not space, and a bigger bin doesn't fix weight. For heavy debris, stay small and follow the rules above.

On weight in general: every size includes tonnage, and if you go over, the overage is $120 per ton plus tax, prorated by the pound from the landfill's certified scale ticket. You receive that ticket, so you're never taking our word for what your load weighed.

Still not sure? That's our job, not yours

You don't need to become a dumpster expert. Call or text (773) 999-1001 and describe the job: "gutting a kitchen in Wesley Chapel" or "cleaning out my mom's house in Dade City" is plenty. We'll tell you the size, and because we're owner-operated, the person sizing your job is the person delivering the bin. Payment is required before delivery, and we place the dumpster exactly where you want it on your driveway or private property. Street placement usually isn't allowed for residential jobs. Same-day delivery may be available depending on dumpster availability and your location.

Tell us the job and we'll tell you the size: call or text (773) 999-1001, or book online.
