Kitchen and Bathroom Remodel Debris: Dumpster Size and Timing

August 16, 2026 · DumpsterX Rentals

For a single kitchen or a single bathroom remodel, the 17 yard is the size to book. It swallows cabinets, countertops, drywall, flooring and fixtures from one room, and at 4 feet tall you can still throw a cabinet door over the side instead of climbing in. Gutting a large kitchen, or doing a kitchen and a bath in the same week, step up to the 22 yard. A powder room, a vanity swap, or a tile-only job usually fits in the 10 yard.

The catch with remodel debris is not space. It is weight. Tile, mortar and backer board are heavy enough to blow past the included tonnage while the bin still looks half empty, and any honest hauler will tell you the same.

What a remodel actually fills

Kitchen

Cabinets are mostly air until they come off the wall, then they eat volume fast. Uppers and lowers from an average kitchen, plus the counter, usually take up a good chunk of a 17 yard on their own. Add drywall, backsplash tile, subfloor, an old range hood and the packaging from the new cabinets and you are near the top.

Laminate counters are light. Granite, quartz and solid surface are not. A single stone slab section can weigh a few hundred pounds by itself, so mention it when you call.

Bathroom

A bathroom is a small room that produces heavy trash. A cast iron tub, a tile shower pan, wall tile with thinset stuck to it, backer board and a toilet add up quickly even though the pile looks small. Most single bathrooms fit the 10 yard on volume, but the 17 yard is the safer call if the shower is fully tiled, because you are buying the second ton, not the extra space.

Why tile weight sneaks up on people

Tile itself is heavy. What people forget is everything glued to the back of it: thinset, cement backer board, and in older homes a full mortar bed poured under the floor. That mortar bed is basically concrete, and it can weigh more than everything else in the bin combined.

If your demo includes a mortar bed, a concrete slab section, brick or block, tell us before delivery. Heavy material needs prior approval and it may need our heavy-material bin instead: that is the same 10 yard box at $390 plus tax, filled three quarters maximum, and it takes concrete, dirt, brick and block only. Mixed remodel trash cannot go in that one. See the concrete dumpster page for how that works.

If it is a small amount of mortar mixed in with normal debris, we will usually keep you in a regular bin and let the scale sort it out.

How overage actually works

We never guess your weight. If you go over the included tonnage, overage is $120 per ton, prorated by the pound from the landfill's certified scale ticket, and you get a copy of that ticket. No rounding up, no flat penalty.

Timing: line the delivery up with demo day

The 3 included days start when the bin lands, so do not have it delivered while you are still picking out tile. The pattern that works best:

  1. Book the bin for the morning demo starts, not the day before.
  2. Load the heavy stuff first, spread across the floor of the bin, not piled at one end.
  3. Fill in with drywall, cabinets and packaging as the week goes.
  4. Call or text when you are done, or add days if the trades run long.

Remodels slip. That is normal, and extensions are cheap at $25 per day, so nobody needs to rush a plumber to beat a pickup truck. Same-day delivery may be available depending on dumpster availability and where you are, but if your demo date is set, booking ahead is the safer play.

Doing a bigger clear-out before the crew arrives? Our home cleanout page covers that side of it.

Placement and access

We put the bin on your driveway or private property, exactly where you want it, and street placement is usually not allowed residentially. Clear the spot before we roll up: cars moved, gate open, low branches noted. If we arrive and cannot deliver or pick up because the spot is blocked, a $150 trip fee may apply, and that is a charge we would rather nobody ever pays.

What we cannot take

Remodels generate a few things that have to go elsewhere: wet paint, batteries, hazardous chemicals and liquids, asbestos, food waste and flammable materials. Old sheet vinyl and mastic in a mid-century bathroom can contain asbestos, and if it does, it needs proper abatement before anything goes in a bin. TVs and tires are accepted with a $25 per item disposal fee.

Bottom line

Book the 17 yard for one room, the 22 yard for a full gut, the 10 yard for a small bath, and call out any tile mortar bed or concrete before delivery so we bring the right box.
